Caddo Parish Cross Lake Dam Service Road Swamp Circuit

The Cross Lake Dam Service Road system gives access to rarely-seen swamp country behind Louisiana’s second-largest lake. Built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1920s for flood control maintenance, these gravel and dirt service roads wind 18 miles through flooded timber stands, around pump stations, and along earthen levees that most folks never know exist. The route connects multiple spillway access points and crosses several elevated causeways over seasonal wetlands where cypress trees grow straight out of standing water.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rainfall — the lower elevation sections can flood during spring and after heavy storms. Any stock vehicle with decent ground clearance handles the main routes, but wet conditions require 4WD. Gates typically stay open dawn to dusk year-round. Bring mosquito spray from May through September. Excellent fishing access and primitive camping along several levee sections. You’ll see alligators, wood ducks, and some of the best remaining bottomland hardwood forest in north Louisiana.
