Sabine River Logging Road Backcountry Network
Timber roads through primal East Texas bottoms.
The Sabine River Logging Road Backcountry Network follows abandoned timber company roads through the bottomland hardwood forests of East Texas, where International Paper and Temple Inland once hauled cypress and oak to mills that fed America’s building boom. These overgrown two-tracks snake through sloughs and creek bottoms near the Louisiana border, crossing cypress-lined waterways at ford sites marked only by rusted cable remnants. The route passes ghost hunting camps from the oil boom years, their collapsed porches now home to wood ducks and river otters.
Moderate difficulty becomes difficult during wet seasons when creek crossings turn treacherous and mud becomes axle-deep. High-clearance 4WD essential, with winch recommended for recovery from inevitable bog-downs. Best season is late fall through early spring when water levels drop and mosquitoes die back. No permits required but respect posted hunting leases. Fuel and supplies in Marshall or Carthage before heading into the bottoms. This is East Texas wilderness at its most primal – where timber barons once ruled and nature is rapidly reclaiming its own.
