Wedge Overlook Road — San Rafael Swell Canyon Rim
Utah's Little Grand Canyon — no crowds, no guardrails.
Head north out of Castle Dale on the signed Wedge Overlook road and you’ll cover about 13 miles of packed dirt and occasional soft spots before the earth drops away at the rim of the San Rafael River gorge — a thousand-foot slot known locally as the Little Grand Canyon. The overlook hits you without warning, which is exactly the point. From here the river coils far below through Navajo sandstone the color of dried blood. Most people stop at the main overlook, but push further along the rim toward Mexican Mountain Road and the views keep giving. Early morning light on the canyon walls is worth setting an alarm for.
This is an easy to moderate route on a good dry day — a stock high-clearance truck handles it fine in summer. But Utah clay is not your friend when wet; this road becomes greasy, slick, and capable of swallowing rigs that have no business being there. Spring snow melt and monsoon season are real hazards. No permit, no fee. Nearest fuel and supplies in Price, about 35 miles north. Dispersed camping along the rim is allowed on BLM land — bring everything you need, including water. Cell service drops to nothing once you leave the highway corridor.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Wedge Overlook Road, or do I need a lifted rig?
A stock high-clearance 2WD truck handles this fine in dry conditions. The road is dirt and gravel with minor ruts — no rock crawling, no lockers needed. A Subaru Outback or similar AWD crossover can often make it too, depending on recent road conditions.
When is Wedge Overlook Road passable, and does it close in winter?
Best windows are April–June and September–November. The road doesn't have a formal winter closure, but desert clay turns to axle-sucking mud after rain or snow — any season. Avoid it for 48+ hours after precipitation.
Do I need a permit to drive or camp at Wedge Overlook?
No permit required. It's BLM land managed out of the Price Field Office — dispersed camping is free, no reservation needed. Follow Leave No Trace and don't camp within 200 feet of the canyon rim.
What's the hardest part of this trail and what should I actually expect?
There's nothing technically hard here — the difficulty is rated easy for a reason. The main thing to watch is the unprotected canyon rim; there are zero guardrails at the overlook, so keep kids and distracted people away from the edge. Road surface is the bigger variable depending on recent weather.
Is there any water source on the trail, and how far is the nearest gas from the trailhead?
No water on the trail — carry everything you need. Castle Dale is the closest town with services, roughly 15–20 miles from the overlook; fuel up there before heading out. Cell service is nonexistent on the road, so download offline maps before you leave pavement.
