Mazama Ridge Road — Crater Lake South Rim to Union Creek via Pumice Flats
Volcanic plateau solitude south of Crater Lake.
The road out of Crater Lake’s south entrance toward Union Creek via the Pumice Flat area is one of those routes that overlanders drive right past on the way to something else. That’s a mistake. Dropping off the rim country, you cross miles of open pumice desert — volcanic fallout from the Mazama eruption 7,700 years ago — before the terrain transitions into dense Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest. The unpaved forest road sections run through stands of old-growth mountain hemlock and white fir, passing primitive camp spots along the upper Rogue River tributaries. Annie Spring and the Mazama Village area serve as solid staging points before you commit to the backcountry stretches heading southwest. It’s a mix of graded gravel and rougher two-track, roughly 35 miles start to finish.
This is a high-clearance route rather than a technical 4×4 challenge — a capable AWD or light-duty truck with decent ground clearance handles most of it in dry conditions. The real threat is season: snow closes the upper roads well into June and can return by October. Check the Fremont-Winema and Rogue River–Siskiyou NF road conditions before you go. No permit needed for most of the corridor, but the Crater Lake National Park entry fee applies if you stage from the rim. Fuel in Klamath Falls or Medford — Union Creek Resort has a small store. Cell service is essentially nonexistent once you’re in the trees. A quiet, underrated run through genuine Oregon high-country wilderness.
