Poker Jim Ridge Road — Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge High Desert Run

Pronghorn country at 7,000 feet — no crowds, no signal.

Moderate

Poker Jim Ridge sits on the eastern escarpment of Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge in south-central Oregon, and the rough two-track that follows it is one of the most isolated drives in the state. The route climbs from the Warner Valley floor onto a broad basalt plateau at nearly 7,000 feet, where pronghorn run in visible herds and the silence is loud enough to notice. From the ridge you get unobstructed views east across the Sheldon Refuge into Nevada and west down the fault scarp toward the Warner Lakes wetlands. The Hart Mountain Hot Spring — a natural 100°F pool tucked behind the refuge campground — is your reward at the end of the road.

This is genuine high-desert backcountry. Carry extra fuel from Lakeview, the nearest town with a pump roughly 65 miles south. The road is rocky and rutted in sections with sharp basalt edges that will find a sidewall if you’re not watching. A high-clearance 4WD is required above the campground approach; stock trucks do fine if you go slow. Snow closes the ridge road from November through May most years. No permit required inside the refuge. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout. Cell service is nonexistent — bring a satellite communicator.
