Pisew Falls Road — Thompson to Pisew Falls Provincial Park Backcountry

Manitoba's tallest falls, earned the hard way.

Moderate

Most people see Pisew Falls from the maintained boardwalk and call it a day. Push past that and you’re into genuine boreal backcountry on rough gravel and seasonal resource roads that hug the Grass River drainage south of Thompson. The 65-kilometre run from Thompson down Provincial Road 280 spur roads to the Pisew trailhead is straightforward enough, but the real reward is threading the unmaintained tracks toward the Kwasitchewan Falls portage country — Manitoba’s tallest waterfall sitting deep in muskeg and black spruce, accessible only on foot or by canoe once the road ends. Expect soft shoulders, frost-heaved gravel, and stretches that turn to greasy clay after rain.

A stock 4WD with decent all-terrain tires handles the main run in dry conditions, but high clearance is non-negotiable if you’re pushing the secondary spurs toward the river. Plan for June through September — spring breakup renders the clay sections impassable, and early June bugs are biblical. Fuel up in Thompson before departure; there’s nothing out here. Cell service drops to nothing within 20 kilometres of town. Dispersed camping is possible along the river corridor. This is black bear and wolf country — handle food accordingly.
