Carmacks to Nordenskiold River Flats — Twin Peaks Mining Road
Yukon interior, no crowds, real river crossing.
Carmacks sits at the geographic heart of Yukon, and most overlanders blow through it on the Klondike Highway without glancing west. The Twin Peaks Mining Road peels off into the Nordenskiold River watershed, running northwest from the highway through boreal spruce and open plateau country before descending to the river flats. The track was cut to service placer and coal exploration in the Nordenskiold drainage — the remnants of the old Twin Peaks coal prospect are visible at roughly the halfway point, a rusted fuel drum and collapsed timber frame half-swallowed by willows. The river crossing at the Nordenskiold flats is seasonal and braided; in early summer it runs knee-deep on a standing adult and requires solid recovery judgment. Spring overflow can make the low sections impassable well into June.
This route rewards patient, self-sufficient rigs over flashy builds. A standard 4WD with high clearance handles the plateau sections fine; the river approach and crossing require 4-low and a read on current depth before committing. Pack for full self-sufficiency — no services, no communications, no other traffic on weekdays. Best season is July through early September when the Nordenskiold drops to manageable levels. Dispersed camping on the river gravel bars is outstanding. This is classic Yukon interior — vast, quiet, and completely unmarketed. Fuel in Carmacks before departure; it’s the only option for 150 kilometres in any direction.
