Teslin Lake East Shore Road — Teslin to Johnson’s Crossing Highlands

Yukon's longest lake, no crowds, real mud.

Moderate

Teslin Lake stretches nearly 145 kilometres through the southern Yukon, and the rough track along its eastern shore gives you a ground-level perspective that the Alaska Highway never will. Starting from the Teslin Bridge area — one of the longest bridged lake crossings in Canada — this route pushes northeast along lakeside benches and through stands of spruce and poplar, crossing several unnamed seasonal creeks before the terrain opens up toward the Johnson’s Crossing highlands. The lake itself dominates every clearing, and on calm mornings the reflection of the Nisutlin Range to the west is genuinely arresting. Watch the crossing at Morley River tributary mid-route — it runs fast and deep in June.

This is a high-clearance route at minimum; a capable 4WD with good all-terrains handles it in dry conditions, but the clay sections after rain turn greasy fast and a locker helps. Fuel up at Teslin before you leave — there’s nothing until Johnson’s Crossing, roughly 80 kilometres by road. No permit required; dispersed camping is open along the lakeshore. Best window is late June through September. Cell service is gone five minutes from town and stays gone. Carry a sat communicator, extra fuel, and your own water filtration.
