Carmacks to Minto Landing Road — Yukon River Bench Country
Old river trade road above the Yukon's canyon bends.
Before the modern highway reroutes took hold, Minto Landing was the crossing point on the Yukon River for travellers pushing north from Carmacks. The dirt track that runs the river benches between the two points follows the old wagon road alignment — roughly 65 kilometres of dry, chunky gravel and sandy two-track cut through open spruce forest with periodic views down into the Yukon River canyon. The track drops to the old ferry landing at Minto, a ghost-town site of abandoned buildings and rusted equipment from the mid-20th century river trade era, worth the detour alone.
This is a moderate run in dry conditions — a stock high-clearance 4WD handles it without drama in summer. Wet weather changes the equation fast; the bench clay goes greasy and the sandy low spots turn to sink-holes. Best driven mid-June through September. No fuel, no services — Carmacks is your last stop for everything. Cell service is gone within a few kilometres of the highway. The payoff is quiet river-bench camping, moose in the willows at dusk, and a real sense of the old Yukon interior that the highway travellers never find.
