McArthur Game Sanctuary Road — Teslin to Swift River Highlands

Branching north off the Alaska Highway near Teslin, this seldom-travelled resource road pushes deep into the Swift River uplands — terrain that most Yukoners know by reputation rather than tire tracks. The route follows old mineral exploration corridors through dense spruce forest, crossing the Jennings River tributary network where beaver-dammed drainages create soft shoulders and surprise water crossings that catch overconfident rigs flat-footed. By the time you reach the elevated benches above the Swift River valley, the view across the St. Cyr Range makes the mud-splattered windshield worth every ounce of it.

This is an honest high-clearance gravel run with sections of unmaintained cat road that demand a capable rig — a lifted truck with good all-terrain rubber is the minimum, and a locker helps when the clay-based soil gets wet. No fuel beyond Teslin, so top up. Cell service drops to zero within 20 km of the highway. Best run July through mid-September before the seasonal rains turn the clay sections into a skating rink. No formal permit required, but bear spray is mandatory common sense. Dispersed camping is available throughout — find a high spot with drainage.
