Miners Range FSR to Fish Lake — Nicola Plateau
Volcanic plateau grind to a fisherman's secret.
The Nicola Plateau doesn’t get the Instagram traffic of the Chilcotin or the Sea-to-Sky, and that’s exactly why it’s worth your time. The Miners Range FSR pulls north off Highway 8 between Spences Bridge and Merritt, climbing through open bunchgrass range before pushing into the Douglas fir and lodgepole pine that define this corner of the Thompson-Nicola. Fish Lake sits at just under 5,000 feet elevation and rewards the drive with a quiet campsite, reliable rainbow trout fishing, and big open skies that make you forget Kamloops exists. The road surface is loose, chunky volcanic rock in the upper section — it’ll chew a sidewall if you’re not paying attention — with some moderate washboarding on the lower reaches that has rattled more than a few truck mirrors loose.
Most high-clearance 4WD rigs with good all-terrain rubber will handle this without drama; it’s not a locker trail, but it will punish a soft-roader or worn tires. Best window is late May through October — snow lingers on the upper bench into June. Merritt is your last fuel and service stop. No permit needed, a couple of rough user campsites at the lake. Zero cell service above the canyon break, and the area sees real wildfire risk in late summer — check BC Wildfire Service before you roll.
