Botanie Valley Road to Botanie Mountain

Fraser Canyon views earned the hard way.

Difficult

Drop off Highway 12 just north of Lytton and the Botanie Valley Road immediately announces itself with a punishing switchback series that gains elevation fast. You’re climbing out of the Fraser-Thompson canyon system into open bunchgrass range and eventually subalpine meadows with unobstructed views stretching from the Coast Mountains to the Cascades. The upper sections above 1,500 metres turn loose and rutted — a narrow shelf road with significant drop-offs on the passenger side and no guardrails. The summit plateau near Botanie Mountain sits around 2,100 metres and in late June is still patchy with snow at the edges. Watch for cattle on the lower range sections; this is active grazing land.

Moderate difficulty on the lower third, stepping to difficult on the upper switchbacks — minimum stock 4WD with decent ground clearance, but a locker makes the rocky upper section significantly less stressful. Best window is late June through September; the road turns to grease in rain and is impassable in shoulder seasons. No formal camping infrastructure but dispersed camping on the plateau is excellent. Lytton is your last fuel and supply stop — and it’s a small town, so top off. No permits. Cell service disappears past the first major switchback.
