Colander Creek FSR to Doreen–Kitimat River Backcountry

Grizzly country and steelhead rivers — Skeena raw.

Difficult

Southwest of Terrace in the Skeena Country, the Kitimat River valley and its tributary drainages hold a web of active and decommissioned forest service roads that push into some of the most remote terrain in northwestern BC. The Colander Creek FSR branches off the main Kitimat River FSR corridor south of the Doreen area, climbing steeply through old-growth Sitka spruce and hemlock forest before opening onto logged slopes with direct views into the Coast Mountains. The Kitimat River itself, a world-renowned steelhead fishery, is accessible at multiple points along the route. Expect active logging traffic on the main stem — yield to trucks, travel midweek when possible, and keep your lights on.

This is a high-clearance 4WD route throughout, with sections of the upper Colander Creek branch requiring low-range and a cautious approach over wash-outs and root-heaved road bed. Grizzly bear density in this corridor is high — carry spray and make noise at all times. There is no cell service past the first few kilometres out of the valley. The Kalum Forest District office in Terrace can provide current road status. Best season is June through October; the spring thaw makes the upper branches impassable well into May most years. Dispersed camping is permitted on Crown land along the FSR. Fuel up in Terrace — Kitimat is the only other option and it’s the wrong direction once you’re in.
