Whipsaw Trail

BC's ultimate technical mountain challenge

Expert

Running 80-plus kilometers from the Coquihalla Highway to Princeton, the Whipsaw is BC’s answer to the Rubicon — except with more bears and fewer tourists. This isn’t some weekend warrior playground; it’s a legitimate technical challenge that chews up under-built rigs and spits out humbled drivers. The trail climbs through the Cascade Mountains via a series of switchbacks that would make a mountain goat nervous, topping out above treeline before dropping into the Tulameen drainage. The notorious “Rock Garden” section near the halfway point has claimed more oil pans and differentials than any other single obstacle in BC.

Expert-level difficulty demands serious preparation: locked axles, skid plates, winch, and a co-pilot who knows when to shut up during the technical bits. July through September offers the only realistic window, and even then, weather can turn this into a multi-day survival scenario. Fuel up before you start — there’s nothing but wilderness for hours. The payoff is bragging rights in the BC 4×4 community and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery you’ll find anywhere. This trail sorts the talkers from the doers, and the mountain doesn’t care about your Instagram followers.
