Chehalis Lake Forest Service Road

Ancient cedars guard pristine alpine wilderness

Moderate

The Chehalis Lake FSR winds 32 kilometers through some of BC’s last intact old-growth cedar stands, following an ancient First Nations trading route to a mirror-flat alpine lake surrounded by peaks. You’ll cross three major creek systems including the technical Harrison Creek ford at kilometer 18 — Scout this one carefully as spring runoff turns it into a rock-rolling beast. The route passes the Sts’ailes Nation petroglyphs site just before the lake, where thousand-year-old carvings tell stories older than most European settlements.

This is no Sunday drive — expect moderate technical sections with loose rock, off-camber side slopes, and creek crossings that’ll test your spotter skills. Stock high-clearance 4WD handles it, but approach tires and recovery gear are smart. Best accessed May through October; winter snow blocks the upper reaches until late spring. No permits required, but respect the cultural sites. The payoff: untouched wilderness camping on the lake shore and some of the finest old-growth forest left standing in the Coast Range.
