Gold Rush Trail (Telegraph Creek to Atlin)

Gold rush ghosts and mountain crossings

Expert

This backcountry connection links Telegraph Creek to Atlin via old mining roads and pack trails that saw thousands of stampeders during the 1898 gold rush. The route climbs through the Cassiar Mountains, crosses Surprise Lake, and drops into the Atlin basin where Discovery City’s ruins still mark the spot where Fritz Miller found the nuggets that started it all. Expect deep ruts, creek crossings, and sections where the trail narrows to barely truck-width between stunted spruce.

Expert-level route requiring modified 4WD with skid plates, winch, and full recovery kit. Multiple water crossings, steep climbs over loose rock, and sections that wash out annually. Attempt only July through August when snow clears and water levels drop. No services for 200 kilometers — carry spare parts, extra fuel, and emergency shelter. The payoff is pure gold rush history and some of the most untouched wilderness in northern BC. Have a dirty day.
