Elaho Forest Service Road

The Elaho FSR branches off Highway 99 just north of Squamish, plunging 35 kilometers into the coastal temperate rainforest that defines this corner of BC. This active logging road threads between thousand-year-old Douglas firs and cedars, crossing multiple creek systems before reaching the pristine Elaho River valley. The notorious Powerhouse Creek crossing at kilometer 18 has been the turning point for many—when it’s running high, even lifted trucks think twice about the approach angle and current.

Expert drivers only need apply here. The surface alternates between loose gravel, exposed bedrock, and seasonal mud that can swallow ATVs whole. Skid plates, recovery gear, and a winch aren’t suggestions—they’re requirements. Best attempted June through September when creek levels drop. No cell service exists past the highway, and the nearest fuel is back in Squamish. The reward justifies the punishment: backcountry camping beside Class V rapids, some of the last intact old-growth forest in the Sea-to-Sky corridor, and solitude that’s becoming impossible to find this close to Vancouver.
