Susúa State Forest Military Bunker Road

WWII bunkers through karst limestone technical terrain.

Difficult

The crumbling concrete foundations of World War II coastal defense bunkers emerge from dense tropical forest as you climb this forgotten military access road through Susúa State Forest. Built in 1942 to defend against potential German U-boat attacks, these concrete fortifications now serve as waypoints on a challenging limestone karst terrain drive that tests ground clearance and line selection. The route follows the original military construction road past Bunker Hill Observatory, where soldiers once watched for enemy vessels approaching Puerto Rico’s southern coast.

This is technical 4×4 territory — stock vehicles will struggle with the sharp limestone ledges and deep erosion channels carved by decades of tropical rainfall. High clearance and skid plates are mandatory for the rocky climbs around the observatory ruins. Best tackled during dry season (December-April) when the muddy clay sections firm up. No permits required, but bring machetes for occasional vegetation clearing and plenty of water since there are no services within the 8,500-acre forest. The payoff is solitude among genuine wartime relics and panoramic views of the Caribbean from the bunker positions.
