Estrada Real da Chapada Diamantina

The Estrada Real cuts through 180 kilometers of Brazil’s diamond heartland, following colonial-era mining routes between Lençóis and Mucugê across the Chapada Diamantina’s sandstone mesas. You’ll cross the Rio Mucugêzinho at least six times, navigate technical rock gardens near Andaraí, and pass abandoned 19th-century mining camps where fortune hunters once sifted gravel for diamonds. The route climbs to 1,200 meters through cerrado savanna before dropping into deep valleys carved by ancient rivers.

This is moderate 4WD territory requiring high clearance and aggressive tread for loose rock sections and seasonal creek crossings. Dry season (May-September) offers the most reliable conditions, though flash floods can make water crossings impassable even then. Fuel up in Lençóis and carry extra water — services are thin between Andaraí and Mucugê. You’ll earn sweeping views of the Sincorá Range and access to Poço Azul’s underground lakes that most tourists miss completely.
