Magruder Road

101 miles of wilderness crossing at 8,000 feet

Difficult

The Magruder Road cuts a spectacular 101-mile line across some of the most remote country in the lower 48, connecting Darby, Montana to Red River, Idaho through the heart of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Built as a mining supply route in the early 1900s, this high-elevation dirt road peaks at 8,000 feet at Magruder Pass and offers views that’ll make you forget you’re driving instead of flying. The route follows ridgelines and crosses dozens of creeks, with the historic Magruder Ranger Station marking the halfway point where miners once resupplied.

This is a moderate to difficult route requiring high-clearance 4WD and careful planning—fuel up before you start because there’s nothing for 100+ miles. Best tackled July through September when snow clears, though creek crossings can be tricky during spring runoff. Expect 6-8 hours of driving plus stops, and bring recovery gear for the occasional muddy stretch. What you get is complete wilderness immersion and bragging rights for completing one of the most isolated forest service roads in America.
