Cuyahoga Valley National Park Towpath Trail Technical Extension
Historic canal towpath with limestone technical sections
The old Ohio & Erie Canal towpath cuts through 20 miles of Northeast Ohio’s forgotten industrial backbone, where limestone ledges drop into the Cuyahoga River and century-old lock ruins emerge from overgrown embankments. The technical sections hit hardest between Boston Store and Everett Road, where spring washouts create challenging rock gardens and the towpath narrows to single-track width above 40-foot drops into the river valley.
This is moderate territory requiring high-clearance and careful line selection during wet seasons when limestone becomes greasy. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but aired-down tires help with traction on the polished stone. Best run spring through fall when water levels are predictable. No permits needed, but parking fills fast on weekends. You’ll earn sweeping valley views, historic canal infrastructure, and a legitimate workout navigating Ohio’s best-preserved transportation corridor.
