Guajataca State Forest Limestone Caves Circuit
Karst caves and coastal cliffs adventure
This technical loop punches through Puerto Rico’s most dramatic karst landscape, where centuries of rainfall carved a Swiss cheese maze of limestone caves and sinkholes. The route connects three major cave systems — Cueva Ventana, Cueva del Viento, and the unnamed petroglyphs cave — via old sugar plantation roads that’ll test your chassis on jagged limestone bedrock. Halfway through, you hit the coastal cliff section with 200-foot drops straight into the Atlantic and views clear to the Dominican Republic on clear days.
Difficult terrain requiring rock sliders and skid plates — the limestone will find every soft spot on your undercarriage. Dry season only (December-April) as the caves flood during hurricane season. No official permits but respect the archaeological sites. Bring headlamps for cave exploration and extra water since there’s none along the route. This is proper adventure territory — you’ll dodge potholes that could swallow a Jeep and emerge with stories about hidden Taíno history most tourists never see.
