BLM Alvord Desert Dispersed Area
The Alvord Desert playa offers some of the West’s most otherworldly camping — miles of perfectly flat alkali hardpan stretching toward the massive wall of Steens Mountain. When the playa is dry, you can camp anywhere on the desert floor, with zero light pollution and silence so complete it’s unsettling. The few established sites along the eastern edge have fire rings built from playa rocks. Bring everything — there’s literally nothing out here but space and sky.
Access from Fields via a good gravel road, but check conditions first. The playa floods during spring snowmelt and after heavy rains, making it impassable. Even when dry, the alkali dust gets into everything. Prime time is late summer through fall when the playa has baked hard and the weather is stable. This is serious remote country — tell someone your plans.
