Badlands Fossil Exhibit Trail East Extension
Beyond tourist zone into pristine badlands
Most tourists never see this unmarked continuation past the main Fossil Exhibit Trail, where the real badlands begin. The route follows cattle paths and old homestead roads through razor-sharp buttes and crumbling spires, passing the abandoned Stronghold Table access road that once served Lakota ceremonial grounds. Navigation gets tricky in the maze of washes — GPS helps, but reading terrain is essential when clouds roll in.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the rocky washes and steep climbs out of creek beds. Sharp rocks will punish street tires mercilessly. Spring and fall offer the best conditions — summer heat reflects brutally off white limestone, and winter ice makes the clay approaches deadly slick. You’ll have this moonscape to yourself, with camping allowed outside the park boundary. Stock up in Wall — there’s nothing out here but silence and ancient seabeds.
