Upper Peninsula Iron Range Historic Mining Road

The ghost of Michigan’s iron boom lives along these forgotten mining roads that snake between Negaunee and Champion, where massive open pits carved the earth like lunar craters. You’ll navigate crumbling concrete foundations of old stamp mills, cross rusted railroad trestles that once hauled ore to Great Lakes freighters, and thread through stands of birch that have reclaimed company towns. The route connects several abandoned mine sites via Forest Service roads and old logging spurs, with the highlight being the overlook above the Tilden Mine—still active and stretching nearly two miles across.

This is moderate terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings and loose gravel climbs. Spring mud season makes it impassable, but summer through early fall delivers crisp air and fall colors that burn against the industrial ruins. No permits needed on the public sections, but respect private mining property. Dispersed camping is excellent along the abandoned rail grades. You’ll experience the raw beauty of industrial decay set against some of the most pristine wilderness Michigan has to offer.
