Keweenaw Peninsula Lake Superior Shore Road
Copper Coast wilderness above Superior.
This remote shore road traces Lake Superior’s edge through the Keweenaw Peninsula’s wildest country, connecting ghost towns, abandoned copper mines, and pristine beaches accessible only by 4×4. The route follows old mining roads built in the 1800s when this peninsula produced 75% of America’s copper, passing the ruins of stamp mills, mine headframes, and company towns swallowed by second-growth forest. Eagle Harbor’s lighthouse marks the halfway point, while Copper Harbor offers fuel and supplies before the road deteriorates into technical two-track along the Superior shore.
Rated difficult for rocky surfaces, water crossings, and seasonal washouts that can strand vehicles for days. Stock 4WD with skid plates essential – the bedrock is unforgiving and cell service nonexistent along most of the route. Best tackled July through September when snow clears and lake effect storms are less violent. Bring recovery gear, extra fuel, and cold-weather camping equipment even in summer. The payoff is solitude on one of the Great Lakes’ most spectacular shorelines, with opportunities to explore shipwrecks, collect agates, and camp on beaches that feel more like Alaska than the Midwest.
