Spearfish Canyon Backcountry Road
Canyon carving through gold country
This rugged alternative to the paved scenic byway follows old mining roads through the heart of Spearfish Canyon, where towering limestone walls squeeze down to single-lane passages and abandoned mine tailings mark historic gold claims. The route branches off near Savoy and climbs through Roughlock Falls area before descending technical switchbacks toward Iron Creek, passing the remnants of the Homestake Mining Company’s forgotten operations.
Difficult rating demands experienced drivers with rock sliders and skid plates — the limestone shelves will find every low-hanging component on your rig. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, though summer flash floods can turn creek crossings deadly. No permits required, but respect private mining claims and pack out everything. Fuel up in Spearfish or Deadwood. The payoff is solitude in one of the Black Hills’ most spectacular canyons, plus access to hidden waterfalls that tour buses never see.
