Impassable Canyon Road
Narrow canyon shelf road that lives up to its name
The name says it all, but don’t let that stop you. Impassable Canyon Road winds 18 miles through a narrow limestone gorge between Stanley and Challis, following an old mining supply route that hugs vertical canyon walls on ledges barely wider than your truck. The road drops into Lost River Valley through a series of switchbacks that’ll test your nerves, especially at Devil’s Elbow where the shelf road curves around a blind corner with a 200-foot drop to the creek below.
This is technical driving that demands experience and a properly equipped rig with skid plates, recovery gear, and good tires. Summer and early fall are the only viable seasons due to snow and ice making the exposed sections deadly. No permits required, but cell service is nonexistent and the nearest fuel is 40 miles either direction. What you get is pure Idaho backcountry solitude and some of the most dramatic canyon scenery in the state, plus excellent dispersed camping along Lost River.
