Sierra Madre Oriental Backbone Trail

High-altitude spine through Mexico's eastern peaks

Expert

The Backbone Trail follows the ridgeline of the Sierra Madre Oriental from Real de Catorce through the cloud forests of Hidalgo, staying above 8,000 feet for most of its length. This isn’t a single road but a network of mining tracks, logging roads, and ancient indigenous paths that string together some of Mexico’s most remote high-country settlements. The route passes through the ghost town of Real de Catorce, crosses the continental divide multiple times, and threads between peaks that scrape 12,000 feet, including a technical descent into Rioverde Canyon that separates weekend warriors from serious overlanders.

Expert difficulty due to altitude, weather exposure, and route-finding challenges across multiple states. Requires modified 4WD with low-range, recovery gear, and cold-weather camping equipment. Rainy season (June-September) makes sections impassable; winter brings snow above 9,000 feet. Best window is October-March with clear, cold conditions. Carry multiple days of food and water — resupply points are 100+ miles apart. What you earn is access to Mexico’s high wilderness, intact Huichol communities, and views that stretch from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific on clear days.
