Wyoming Range Trail 300 – Salt River Pass Route

Wyoming Range backbone through active logging country

Moderate

Trail 300 climbs steadily from Afton through active logging operations before cresting Salt River Pass at 8,400 feet, offering commanding views of the Tetons to the northwest and Wind River Range to the northeast. The 34-mile route follows mostly maintained logging roads with several technical rocky sections, particularly the descent toward LaBarge Creek where you’ll navigate loose shale slopes and multiple seasonal stream crossings. Active logging means sharing the road with massive timber trucks, especially weekdays, but also ensures decent road maintenance through most sections.

Moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though 4WD recommended during wet conditions when the clay sections become treacherous. Best season runs June through October, avoiding hunting season in September when the area sees heavy use. No permits required. Cell service exists near the pass but disappears on both descents. Dispersed camping abundant with excellent sites near Salt River and LaBarge Creek. You’ll experience working forest country while crossing one of Wyoming’s most scenic divides, with potential wildlife encounters including moose, elk, and the occasional black bear.
