Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas Railway Heritage Circuit

Iron ore railway heritage through mining country

Moderate

The old Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas follows the historic railway corridor that hauled iron ore from Minas Gerais to the port at Vitória for over a century. Your rig will grind through red dirt roads parallel to active rail lines, passing abandoned mining camps and rusted equipment scattered through the Serra do Espinhaço foothills. The route crosses dozens of steel bridges over deep valleys, with the most technical challenge at Ponte Nova where seasonal flooding can make crossings treacherous.

This is moderate difficulty requiring high clearance and diff locks for the steeper mining access roads. Dry season (May-September) is essential — the red clay becomes impassable soup when wet. Fuel up in Governador Valadares and carry extra water. You’ll traverse 400 kilometers of Brazil’s industrial mining heritage while camping among Atlantic Forest fragments that somehow survived the iron rush.
