Torres del Paine Backcountry Access Roads

Ranch roads to granite towers

Moderate

These little-known access roads penetrate deep into Torres del Paine’s backcountry, following ranch tracks and park service roads to viewpoints most tourists never see. The route connects Estancia Cerro Paine with the remote Dickson Lake area via old sheep station roads, passing through private estancias where gauchos still work massive spreads beneath the granite towers. The technical challenge comes at Río Paine crossing, where you ford the glacial river during low water windows twice daily.

Easy to moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicle and river crossing confidence. Weather changes fast—pack layers and emergency gear year-round. Park permits required, coordinate with CONAF rangers for backcountry access authorization. Best season December through March for river crossings and road conditions. Fuel in Puerto Natales only. Designated camping at established estancia sites with permission. This route reveals Patagonia’s working ranch culture while delivering unmatched granite spire views from angles the hiking masses never experience.
