Angelina National Forest Neches River Bottom Circuit

Swamp roads through forgotten oil country

Difficult

The Forest Service roads that penetrate the Neches River bottom in Angelina National Forest drop you into a different world — cypress swamps, bottomland hardwoods, and the ghosts of 1930s oil drilling operations. Forest Road 303 starts solid but quickly deteriorates into two-track that’ll have you picking lines through standing water and over abandoned pipeline berms. At Boykin Springs, you’ll find the remains of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp before the trail turns seriously challenging through Mud Creek bottom.

This is difficult territory that demands serious mud tires, a winch, and experience reading swamp ground. Even in dry seasons, expect hub-deep muck in the creek bottoms. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, but summer heat makes this nearly unbearable. No permits required, but inform someone of your route — cell service dies completely once you drop into the bottoms. You’ll earn genuine East Texas backcountry solitude and some of the most pristine bottomland forest left in the state.
