Bastrop State Park CCC Trail
CCC roads through Texas' Lost Pines
The Bastrop State Park CCC Trail follows the original construction roads built by Company 879 during the 1930s, winding through the unique Lost Pines ecosystem — the westernmost stand of loblolly pines in Texas, separated by 100 miles from the East Texas forests. The route connects the old CCC camp sites, stone shelter buildings, and fire tower locations, with sandy washes and pine needle-covered sections that can get tricky when wet, especially the steep descent near Cabin 6 and the technical creek crossing at Copperas Creek.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though the sandy sections require momentum and good tires. Best driven in dry conditions; avoid during wet weather when the sand turns to quick-moving muck. Day-use park fees apply but no permits needed. No dispersed camping in the park, but developed campsites available. This route offers both Texas history and the rare chance to experience a completely unique ecosystem — these pines survived the last ice age in this isolated pocket and represent a living piece of prehistoric Texas.
