McClellan Creek National Grassland Comanche War Trail

This remote grassland route follows sections of the historic Comanche War Trail, where Quanah Parker’s band moved between hunting grounds in the 1870s. The track crosses McClellan Creek multiple times via shallow fords, then climbs onto the caprock where you can see Adobe Walls battlefield site in the distance. Prairie dog towns stretch for miles, and the silence is broken only by meadowlark song and wind through buffalo grass. County Road markers guide you through a maze of ranch gates and cattle guards.

Moderate difficulty with several creek crossings that can flood after storms. Stock 4WD recommended for the creek fords, though high-clearance 2WD works in dry conditions. Spring and fall offer the best weather, but summer thunderstorms turn crossings dangerous fast. No permits required on public sections, but respect private land boundaries marked by gates. Limited shade means bring plenty of water. You’ll drive through some of the most unchanged landscape in Texas, where the horizon stretches unbroken and history feels close enough to touch.
