Guanacaste Province Liberia to Playa Junquillal Coastal Sand Track
Cattle ranch roads to pristine Pacific beaches
This route cuts through Guanacaste’s dry tropical forest and working cattle ranches to reach some of Costa Rica’s most isolated Pacific beaches. Starting from Liberia, the track follows old ranch roads through teak plantations and past the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, where sea turtles nest by the thousands. The final 15 kilometers turn technical as you navigate deep sand approaches to Playa Junquillal and Playa Avellanas, where consistent surf breaks meet virtually untouched coastline.
Moderate to difficult depending on sand conditions — dry season firms up the beach approaches while wet season creates deeper, looser sections that demand momentum and proper tire pressure. High-clearance 4WD mandatory, with sand recovery gear essential. Low range and aired-down tires (18-20 PSI) make the difference on the beach sections. December through March offers the most reliable conditions. Camping possible at several beaches, but bring all water and supplies from Liberia. You’ll trade comfort for some of the most pristine coastline remaining in Central America.
