The Miravalles geothermal circuit winds through active volcanic terrain where underground heat creates natural steam vents, boiling mud pools, and hot springs that bubble up through fractured volcanic rock. The route follows old seismic exploration roads built by geothermal companies, passing massive cooling towers and pipeline networks that harness the volcano’s energy. Technical sections include steep volcanic ash climbs and loose pumice descents that challenge traction, while sulfur vents create otherworldly landscapes where nothing grows except heat-adapted bacteria that paint the rocks in vivid yellows and oranges.

This is expert-level terrain requiring modified 4WD with aggressive tires and strong cooling systems — the ambient ground heat can stress vehicle systems. Dry season (December-April) offers the best access, though volcanic dust creates its own hazards. You’ll need MINAE permits for some sections and should carry extra water since the geothermal activity makes natural water sources unsafe to drink. The payoff is experiencing one of Central America’s most active volcanic zones and soaking in natural hot springs that reach 104°F.
