Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 734 Ya Ha Tinda Ranch to Bighorn River Junction
Wild horses, wilder country, zero cell bars.
The Ya Ha Tinda Ranch is one of Canada’s last working government horse ranches, perched on a broad subalpine meadow plateau where the Red Deer River pushes west toward Banff National Park. This section of Hwy 734 runs north from the ranch access road through rolling foothills and lodgepole pine, dropping into the Bighorn River drainage. You’ll cross the Red Deer River ford near the ranch — impassable in high runoff — and push north past the Bighorn Backcountry ranger station where the road narrows to a two-track in places. Wildlife density here is absurd: elk, bighorn sheep, wolves, and grizzly are all documented regulars on this corridor.
A capable stock 4WD with high clearance handles this route most of the season, but the Red Deer River crossing demands caution in June and early July when snowmelt runs high. Mud on the plateau benches is tire-sucking in wet weather — lockers help. Cell service is nonexistent. No permits required but carry a topographic map; the Bighorn Backcountry has a maze of resource roads branching off the main trunk. Best window is late July through September. Nearest fuel and supplies are in Sundre or Rocky Mountain House. This is foothills overlanding at its quietest and most rewarding.
