Desierto de la Tatacoa Observatory Hill Dispersed Camping
A collection of flat spots on a low hill overlooking the Tatacoa’s red rock formations, about 2km past the main tourist zone. Sandy ground with scattered thorny scrub provides natural windbreaks and privacy between sites. Popular with astronomy groups during new moon phases — bring your own shade and water as there’s zero infrastructure up here.
Access via a rough dirt track that branches off the main desert road. Passable in dry conditions but can turn to sticky clay after rain. Local authorities patrol occasionally but camping is tolerated. Nights get surprisingly cold despite the desert heat.
Desert stargazing with zero light pollution
