Chihuahua Sierra Madre Copper Canyon Rim Trail
Canyon rim route with 4,000-foot exposure drops
This gnarly 120-mile route follows the western rim of Mexico’s deepest canyon system, connecting the logging town of Creel with the remote pueblo of Urique far below. The track clings to cliff edges with drops exceeding 4,000 feet into the Barranca del Cobre, passing active Tarahumara caves and the notorious Mirador de la Ventana — a rock window overlooking six converging canyons. The descent to Urique involves 47 switchbacks down an old mining road that’s carved directly into the canyon wall, with sections so narrow that mirrors fold automatically against the rock.
Expert-level difficulty due to extreme exposure, loose rock surfaces, and technical downhill sections requiring precise vehicle control. High-clearance 4WD with good brakes and low-range gearing absolutely essential — this isn’t a trail for mechanical failures. Best attempted March through May when weather stays stable and before summer monsoons turn the route into a muddy nightmare. Fuel up in Creel and carry emergency supplies — the nearest mechanic is hours away. The reward is access to one of North America’s most spectacular canyon systems and encounters with Tarahumara runners who still cover these routes on foot.
