Sproul State Forest Bear Run Road

Bear Run Road cuts through 280,000 acres of Sproul State Forest, Pennsylvania’s largest state forest, where the sound of chainsaws from distant logging operations echoes through valleys that haven’t changed much since the 1800s. The route follows an old logging railroad grade from Renovo up Bear Run valley, crossing the rocky creek six times before reaching the headwaters near Bear Run Reservoir, with challenging rocky ledges and water crossings that can turn treacherous after spring snowmelt or summer storms.

This is moderate-difficulty territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear — those creek crossings can surprise you with hidden boulders and shifting gravel. Best tackled May through October when water levels drop, though primitive camping is allowed throughout the forest with a permit. You’ll earn solitude here that’s rare in Pennsylvania, plus some of the best wild trout fishing in the state if you pack a rod. Cell service disappears once you leave the main forest road.
