Allegheny National Forest Hearts Content Scenic Area Backcountry Loop
Virgin timber and logging camp ruins
Hearts Content protects one of Pennsylvania’s few remaining old-growth forest fragments, where 300-year-old hemlocks tower above a network of logging roads that somehow missed the 19th-century clear-cut. This backcountry loop connects Forest Roads 127 and 346 through cathedral groves of virgin timber, crossing West Branch Tionesta Creek at the historic logging camp ruins. The creek crossing demands careful timing—spring snowmelt turns the normally ankle-deep ford into a torrent that’s swallowed more than one overconfident driver.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles and basic recovery gear for muddy sections and the creek crossing. Spring through fall offers the best passage, though October brings spectacular old-growth color. No permits needed for day use, but overnight camping requires designated sites. Limited cell service and the nearest supplies are 30 miles south in Tionesta. This is your chance to drive through Pennsylvania as it existed before European axes—towering timber and wilderness silence that’s increasingly rare east of the Mississippi.
