McAfee Knob Trailhead

Trailhead

The McAfee Knob trailhead provides access to one of Virginia’s most iconic hiking destinations via a 7.4-mile round-trip section of the Appalachian Trail. The trail climbs steadily through oak and pine forest to reach the famous rocky outcrop that juts dramatically over the Catawba Valley. The knob itself offers 270-degree views and has become Virginia’s most Instagram-famous hiking spot.

Parking fills completely by 8 AM on weekends year-round — plan for very early starts or weekday visits. The lot accommodates about 40 vehicles but has no facilities beyond the trailhead kiosk. Trail conditions are good but expect crowds at the summit, especially during sunrise and sunset hours. Winter hiking is possible but requires microspikes for the final rocky approach.
