Burke’s Garden Natural Spring
Burke’s Garden spring emerges from limestone bedrock at the base of Garden Mountain, flowing clear and cold year-round at around 50 degrees. The spring feeds into Wolf Creek and eventually the New River system. Located in Tazewell County’s famous circular valley — a geological bowl surrounded by mountains that early settlers called ‘God’s Thumbprint’ — this reliable water source has served travelers for centuries.
Access via Burke’s Garden Road (Route 623) from Tazewell, then local roads to the spring site near the old Burke’s Garden Store. The valley sits at 3,100 feet elevation, making it cooler than surrounding lowlands. Water quality is generally excellent, though standard backcountry treatment is recommended. The circular valley itself is worth the drive — pristine farmland surrounded by mountains with limited development.
