Forest Road 55 Cold Mountain Wilderness Access
Remote wilderness access through forgotten logging country
Forest Road 55 cuts a narrow path through some of the most remote terrain in Jefferson National Forest, climbing steadily toward the Cold Mountain Wilderness boundary. This forgotten logging road winds through dense hardwood forests and rocky ridgelines, passing the remains of old timber camps and crossing several unnamed mountain streams. The route dead-ends at a primitive camping area near the wilderness boundary, where the real adventure begins on foot.
This is a moderate route requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially after heavy rains when stream crossings can become technical. Expect loose rock, deep ruts, and overgrown sections that’ll scratch your paint. Best tackled April through October when the worst mud has dried out. No permits needed, but dispersed camping is allowed at the terminus. Pack all your water and fuel – there’s nothing but wilderness for miles in any direction.
