Jefferson National Forest Barbours Creek Wilderness Road

Civil War iron furnace ruins via technical mountain track

Expert

Barbours Creek Wilderness Road follows an 1800s iron ore transport route deep into Jefferson National Forest’s remote backcountry. The track begins innocuously near New Castle but quickly deteriorates into loose shale switchbacks that climb 2,000 feet through dense oak and hickory forests. At mile 8, the ruins of Barbours Creek Iron Furnace emerge from the undergrowth — stone masonry from the 1850s when this valley rang with hammer blows and furnace roar. Creek crossings become technical after heavy rains, with boulder gardens that demand careful wheel placement.

Expert drivers only should attempt the full route, especially the final descent toward Craig Creek where washouts and fallen timber create genuine obstacles. A stock Jeep Wrangler represents the minimum entry fee, but lockers and skid plates earn their keep on the rocky descents. October’s fall colors make this route spectacular, but avoid winter and early spring when ice makes the shale slopes treacherous. No permits required, but cell service vanishes after mile 3. You’ll earn solitude, Appalachian history, and respect for Virginia’s mountain terrain.
