The Coal River Mountain ORV Complex transforms former strip-mining operations into a playground of technical challenges, where towering spoil piles and reclaimed benches create an otherworldly landscape of red clay and scattered coal seams. The Valley Circuit winds through the heart of the 8,000-acre complex, connecting signature obstacles like Devil’s Backbone (a narrow ridge with 200-foot drops) and the Mud Bowl, a seasonal water crossing that can swallow a stock truck to its door handles.

Difficulty ranges from beginner-friendly gravel roads to expert-only rock crawls that’ll humble any rig. Most trails require at least high-clearance 4WD, with the gnarlier sections demanding lockers, winches, and recovery gear.
