Briery Gap Road Coal Heritage Circuit

Coal heritage route through abandoned mining country.

Difficult

Briery Gap Road traces the old coal company route between Logan and Wyoming counties, passing through ghost towns like Omar and Chauncey where coal tipples once dominated the landscape. The route follows narrow mountain roads carved into steep hillsides, with switchbacks that challenge even experienced drivers as they navigate between long-abandoned mining operations. The technical highlight comes at the crossing of Island Creek, where the old railroad bridge foundations create a challenging rocky ford during low water.

This difficult route demands experienced 4WD drivers with good spotting skills — the narrow shelf roads have limited turnaround opportunities and steep drop-offs. High-clearance vehicles with rock sliders are essential, especially for the creek crossing and loose shale sections. Best attempted in dry conditions from late summer through fall when creek levels drop. No permits required, but inform someone of your route before heading in. The reward is a glimpse into West Virginia’s coal mining heritage in country few people ever see, with scattered campsites near old mining settlements.
