Cinder Cone Lava Tubes
This perfectly-shaped volcanic cone erupted roughly 20,000 years ago, leaving behind accessible lava tube caves and a moonscape of black cinders. The main tube extends about 300 feet underground with multiple chambers — bring a headlamp and expect to crawl in spots. The cinder cone itself rises 700 feet and offers commanding views of the Kelso Dunes and surrounding mountain ranges from its rim.
Access via the dirt road that branches north from Kelso Cima Road near mile marker 16. High-clearance recommended for the final approach to the tubes. The caves stay cool year-round (around 60°F), making this a great summer escape. No permits required, but watch for loose rock and bring multiple light sources. The volcanic landscape here is stark and alien — like Mars with better cell coverage.
