Forest Service Road 106 Blowing Rock Gorge Technical Loop
Technical gorge crawl to hidden waterfalls.
Forest Service Road 106 drops into Johns River Gorge through a maze of house-sized boulders and granite slabs, following the abandoned Mortimer-Lenoir Railroad grade that once hauled timber from these mountains to the furniture mills below. The technical crux comes at Harper Creek Falls, where you’ll need to navigate around massive flood debris while staying on the designated route through this protected Wild and Scenic River corridor.
Difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers with full protection packages and recovery gear. The route floods easily during heavy rains, so avoid spring runoff and summer storm seasons. No permits required but camping is restricted to designated areas only. Cell service is nonexistent in the gorge. What makes this worth the effort is pristine waterfall access and some of the best technical rock crawling in the southern Appalachians.
